Broccoli is a green vegetable eaten from June to October. It is easily recognizable thanks to its green colour and its full florets. It is very popular in cooking. It is eaten in au gratin, but also in salads, purees and soups. It belongs to the brassica family and is a biennial vegetable. There are three types of broccoli. There is the annual broccoli, the romanesco cabbage and the broccoli sprouts. This cabbage is one of the easiest vegetable garden plants to grow.

It can be planted in well-prepared soil, enriched with compost or manure in the previous fall, and transplanted in March when its leaves have grown well. It prefers a sunny exposure and a rich soil rather fresh and humid.

When the broccoli plants are equipped with a few leaves (3 or 4), it is necessary to transplant in place without forgetting to protect the crop, especially transplanting before May. The transplanting must be done every forty centimeters to let the plants develop. It is necessary to water the broccoli in a rather regular way, with a light rain in order to preserve a sufficient moisture, because the ground needs to be rather wet. The broccoli can then be harvested when the head is fairly formed and compact.
