Yes, diatomaceous earth to treat cat fleas, it works!
Fortunately, there are treatments to eliminate fleas in cats. Diatomaceous earth is an effective way to get rid of it. Its advantage lies in particular in the absence of harm to the animal treated with this product.
Origins of diatomaceous earth
Diatomaceous earth comes from diatomite quarries. This natural product is actually sedimentary rock which is characterized by high friability, porosity and lightness. It is composed of diatoms, fossilized unicellular algae.
It should be emphasized that diatomaceous earth is not chemically transformed after its extraction. It is particularly useful for eliminating insects and parasites such as fleas for example. We also know other names such as diatomite, kieselguhr, celite or silicon dioxide.
It is the sharp edges of diatoms that are fatal for parasites. For use on your cat, but also on your dog, you must ensure that you obtain food grade diatomaceous earth. This must be packaged in powder form. It is very effective against flea invasions, while being completely harmless to the pet.
Using diatomaceous earth on your cat
It is necessary to apply diatomaceous earth to a perfectly dry coat. When it is humidified, its effectiveness becomes zero. It must be well integrated into the fur by kneading the hairs using your hands. Diatomaceous earth powder should under no circumstances come into contact with the animal's eyes or its snout. The product must then be left in place for 48 to 72 hours. After this time, the coat can be brushed using a flea comb. This must be renewed every three days on a period of approximately three weeks.
This treatment time is necessary to eradicate all parasites, even those that come from the eggs over time. The cat's fur actually constitutes an egg-laying site for fleas. This is why their elimination must be carried out throughout their life cycle.
Additional measures
At the same time as this operation, you should plan to sprinkle diatomaceous earth wherever the cat usually goes in the house. If you also spread it outdoors, you should repeat the process each time it rains. With this flea repellent, it may take longer for all fleas to disappear than with a chemical flea treatment. However, it has the significant advantage of preserving the health of animals. Therefore, it is a good idea to always have some on hand.
