Saskatoon berry
How do I plant a serviceberry?
To grow serviceberry, it is best to plant it in open ground in autumn or spring. Choose a sunny or semi-sunny spot with well-drained, acidic soil. Serviceberry tolerates poor soil, but it is advisable to add some compost at planting to encourage growth.
Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and place the plant gently at the same depth as in its original container. Fill the hole with soil, tamp lightly, and water thoroughly. Mulch around the base to help retain moisture and limit weed growth.
If planting in a pot, choose a large container with good drainage and use a substrate suitable for shrubs. Water regularly without allowing standing water in the saucer. In winter, protect the serviceberry from frost by placing it in a sheltered spot or covering it with winter fleece.
