When to sow poppies?

To sow poppies outdoors, it is best to do so in spring or autumn, when the soil is still fresh. Before sowing, it is important to prepare the soil well by turning it over and weeding carefully. Poppies prefer well-drained soil in full sun, so choose a sunny spot in your garden.

To sow the seeds, broadcast them over the surface of the soil and cover lightly with soil. Be sure to space the seeds about 20 cm apart to allow the plants to develop properly. Water regularly, especially in dry weather, but avoid excess water which could rot the seeds.

After germination, be sure to thin out the plants to keep only one or two poppies every 20 cm. As poppies are wildflowers, they don't need fertiliser to grow well. However, make sure you remove any weeds that might compete with your poppies for nutrients. Then enjoy their ephemeral, colourful blooms throughout the summer.
