Dahlia
Can dahlias be sown under cover?
To grow dahlias under cover, start by sowing the seeds in individual containers, such as peat pots, in early spring. Use a light, well-drained potting mix. Place the seeds on the surface of the mould and cover lightly with potting soil. Keep the potting soil moist but not soggy by using a water sprayer.
Place your pots in a warm, bright place, but away from direct sunlight. Dahlias need plenty of light to germinate. Make sure you maintain a constant temperature of around 20°C. Dahlia seeds generally germinate in 2 to 3 weeks.
Once the plants have a few leaves, you can transplant them into larger pots or directly into the ground in your garden. Choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Dahlias like rich, cool soil, but avoid using chemical fertilisers.
Water regularly, taking care not to let the soil dry out completely between waterings. Also keep an eye out for diseases and pests, such as aphids. By following these tips, you'll be able to enjoy beautiful dahlias all summer long.
