How to plant a Japanese maple
Growing a Japanese maple is relatively straightforward but does require some care. It is best to plant a Japanese maple in autumn (or spring), preferably in well-drained, fertile soil. Choose a sunny or slightly shady spot, sheltered from strong winds.
Create a hole twice as wide as the Japanese maple's container and incorporate compost or leaf compost to enrich the soil. Make sure the collar of the plant is level with the ground.
After planting, water thoroughly to moisten the soil, then tamp lightly. It's important to keep the soil moist but not soggy, especially during hot spells.
If you already have a potted Japanese maple and want to transplant it, take care to decompact the roots before replanting it in fresh, well-drained soil.
By following these tips and regularly observing your Japanese maple, you'll be able to enjoy its beauty and splendour in your garden.
