How do I sow eschscholzias outdoors?
To sow California poppies (eschscholzia) outdoors, we recommend doing so in spring, once the risk of frost has passed. Prepare the soil by loosening it with a spading fork, without adding chemical fertilisers. Then spread the seeds over the surface of the soil and cover them with a thin layer of soil. Water gently to keep the soil moist, but avoid excess water, which could cause the seeds to rot.
Spacing the seeds about 20 to 30 centimetres apart will allow the plants to develop properly. Make sure the young plants receive sufficient light from direct sunlight and that the soil remains well-drained. Once the plants have grown well, you can thin out to leave just one plant every 20 to 30 cm.
It's important to keep an eye out for snails and slugs, which can damage young poppy plants. To keep them away naturally, you can use wood ash or crushed eggshells around the plants. With a little patience and care, your California poppies will flower and add a colourful touch to your garden.
