How do I plant a fig tree?

To plant a fig tree in the ground, we recommend doing so in spring or autumn, when the soil is neither too dry nor too wet. Choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Dig a wide, deep hole, then mix the soil with a little compost to enrich the soil without using chemical fertilisers.

Provide a spacing of around 4 to 5 metres between each tree to allow good air circulation. Plant the fig tree, taking care to spread the roots well and cover it with soil right up to the crown. Water well after planting, then regularly to keep the soil slightly moist. Once the tree is well established, you won't need to add any extra fertiliser, but be sure to mulch the soil to conserve moisture and limit weed growth.

If you need to transplant a fig tree already in a pot, do so preferably in early spring. Carefully uproot the plant, taking care not to damage the roots, and follow the same planting steps as for a young tree.
