How do I sow Chinese chives outdoors?

To grow Chinese chives successfully outdoors, it's important to choose the right sowing period. Ideally, you can sow your seeds in spring, once any risk of frost has passed. Before sowing, work the soil by weeding and levelling it. Chinese chives prefer light soil, rich in organic matter and well drained.

Then sow your seeds 1 to 2 centimetres deep and space each seed about 10 centimetres apart. Be sure to water regularly but sparingly to avoid excess water. Chinese chives don't need any additional fertiliser, they'll be happy with soil that's been enriched beforehand.

Once your plants have sprouted, be sure to protect them from weeds by regularly hand weeding. Also, keep an eye out for any pests and diseases and act quickly if necessary. With these few tips, you'll be able to enjoy fine harvests of Chinese spring onions with ease.
