Medlar
How do I plant a medlar tree?
To plant a medlar tree, make sure you choose a location in full sun with well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Loquat trees prefer soil rich in organic matter and with little limestone. We recommend planting in autumn, preferably in November. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball of the plant and incorporate a little compost at the bottom of the hole.
If you need to transplant your medlar tree, make sure you do it in spring. The young plants should be spaced about 4 metres apart. Water regularly the first year to encourage rooting. Once established, medlar is a low-maintenance plant. It withstands the cold well, but you can mulch the foot to protect it in winter.
Avoid chemical fertilisers, prefer mulch and natural fertilisers to feed your medlar tree. Prune regularly to encourage an attractive growth habit and remove dead wood. If you follow this advice, your medlar tree should grow well and give you delicious fruit!
