How do I sow poet's carnations successfully under cover?
To grow poet's carnations, we recommend sowing them under cover in spring. Choose a deep container and fill it with light, well-drained potting soil. Sow the seeds on the surface of the compost, spacing them a few centimetres apart, then cover them with a thin layer of compost. Water lightly to keep the potting soil moist, but be careful not to over-wet to prevent the seeds from rotting.
Place the container under cover, at a temperature of around 18-20°C. The seeds will germinate in 10-14 days. Once the plants have developed 2-3 leaves, transplant them into individual pots filled with potting soil rich in organic matter.
Poet carnations appreciate a sunny position and well-drained soil. Be sure to protect them from strong winds and excess humidity. Remember to stake them to support their fragile stems.
