How do I sow poppies outdoors?

To sow poppies outdoors naturally, choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil. The best time to sow poppies is in spring or autumn. Before sowing, prepare the soil by weeding and decompacting. You can mix in a little compost or potting soil to improve the structure of the soil, but no chemical fertilisers.

Scatter the poppy seeds over the surface of the soil and lightly cover them with soil. Space the seeds about 20-30 cm apart to allow the plants to develop properly. Water gently to keep the soil moist but not soggy.

Be sure to protect the young plants from slugs and snails, which can feed on them. Once the poppies are well established, they will require little maintenance apart from occasional watering during dry spells. Enjoy their beautiful, colourful flowers in your garden throughout the season.
