How to sow sweet peas successfully under cover?

To sow sweet peas under cover, we recommend doing so in early spring, around March-April. Sweet peas are climbing plants that need warmth to grow well, so it's best to sow them under cover to protect them from the last of the spring frosts.

Choose a deep container, such as cups or small pots, filled with a mixture of universal potting soil and compost. Sow the sweet pea seeds 1 or 2 cm deep and about 5 cm apart.

Be sure to keep the potting soil moist but not soggy. Place the cups under cover in a bright, warm place at a temperature of around 18-20°C. Sweet pea seeds generally germinate in one to two weeks.

Be careful not to over-water to prevent the seeds and young plants from rotting. As soon as the plants have a few leaves, you can transplant them into the ground, guiding them on supports to help them climb.
