How do I plant tulips?

To plant tulips in the ground, it's best to do so in autumn, around 6 to 8 weeks before the first frost. Choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Dig a hole twice as deep as the size of the bulb and space them about 10 cm apart. Place the bulb in the hole, pointing upwards, and cover it with soil. Water lightly to encourage rooting.

If you want to transplant your tulips, you can do so after flowering, when the leaves start to turn yellow. Gently dig out the bulbs, leave them to dry out a little in the shade, then store them in a cool, dry place until next autumn to replant them.

Tulips don't need fertiliser, but you can add a little well-rotted compost before planting. Don't forget to protect them from rodents by placing protective netting over the bulbs. By following these simple tips, your tulips are sure to bloom and bring a splash of colour to your garden this spring!
