How to plant a vine in your garden?

The vine, also known as Vitis vinifera, is a woody plant that originated in Europe. A necessary step in growing your own wine or enjoying delicious grapes, planting vines is an attainable dream as long as you follow some basic principles. So, where is the ideal place to plant a vine in your garden? What are the right gestures to adopt? Permapotes, expert in permaculture, sheds some light on the subject!

Where to plant your vine?

The trellis, term designating a vine climbing along a wall or a tree, should ideally be oriented to the south or southeast. If you decide to plant a vine along a tarmac wall, the trick is to plant the vine in more favourable soil and to bring the main stem towards the south-facing façade as it grows.

Small holes, small holes, small holes again...

It is important to keep in mind that the branches of a vine can climb up to 5 metres in height! You will therefore need to allow for a space of 2.5 to 3 metres if you plant your vines along a wall or 1 metre if you plan to form a row. Have you found the perfect place to allow your vines to grow serenely without overlapping each other? Let's now look at the steps to take during the actual planting:

  • Dig holes 30 cm deep and 30 cm in diameter
  • Water the bottom of the hole generously
  • Pour a handful of compost into the hole
  • Cover the compost with a little soil to prevent the roots from coming into contact with the compost

Once the plant has been placed, you only have to fill in the hole with the soil you dug beforehand. When filling in the hole, make sure to create a trough. This will make it easier for you to water the plant. In fact, watering as soon as the hole is filled in is necessary to get the plant off to a good start!

Permapotes' tip: installing a stake

Grazing animals such as deer or rabbits will be delighted to get into your vegetable garden and destroy your newly planted plants. To prevent damage, you caninstall a 1-metre high wire mesh sleeve around each plant. Be careful, however: when the buds bloom in spring, you must make sure that some of them do not get stuck inside the wire mesh, otherwise you will have great difficulty extracting them without damage.
