Grape (vine)
We like to taste grapes at the end of summer and even more when they grow in the garden. Grapes are tasty in desserts but also in juice, wine, pies, cakes... Grapes belong to the Vitaceae family. There are many varieties of grapes. For an early harvest, choose the Madeleine Royale. The golden Chasselas of Fontainebleau is harvested in September, the Muscat of Alexandria in November. The vine is easy to cultivate if you live in a sufficiently warm region.
The grapes are planted in the spring to give them time to establish themselves before winter. If you plant in autumn, you should provide protection. Grapes like the sun and must be protected from the wind. The soil should be light, deep and rather chalky. It must be prepared in depth with an organic fertilizer without contact with the roots.
For a greater production, the vine is pruned at two eyes. The most beautiful branch is then kept and pruned. During the summer, we prune or three leaves above the last clusters. If the weather is very dry, dig lightly around the vine and water. It is possible to harvest grapes in the first year after planting. The bunches will be few, but with good care, it is possible to harvest up to 25 kg of grapes.
