How do you sow angelica outdoors?
Use angelica seeds as fresh as possible because they do not keep well. Sow ripe seeds promptly, usually in late summer or autumn. Check the date on the packet and the supplier’s instructions. Dried seeds may need a period of moist chilling before sowing; follow the procedure given for your particular seed lot.
Prepare a container with drainage holes and freely draining seed compost. Spread the seeds over the surface and press them gently into contact with it, without burying them: light helps germination. Put the container in a cool, bright place, using an unheated cold frame when conditions allow. Keep the compost moist with gentle watering, avoiding both saturation and a dry surface.
Germination can take one to three months, so continue checking the container rather than discarding it after a few weeks. When the first true leaves appear, carefully transfer seedlings to sufficiently deep pots. Plant them out while still small, keeping root disturbance to a minimum, in moist soil in sun or partial shade. Allow about 60 to 90 cm between plants so their leaves have room to develop.
