How do I plant a feijoa in my garden?

Feijoa, also known as Brazilian guava, is a fruit plant native to South America. To grow it in your garden, it is best to plant it in the ground in a sunny spot sheltered from the wind. The best time to plant feijoa is in spring, when the risk of frost has passed.

Before planting, make sure the soil is well drained, as feijoa does not like standing moisture. If your soil is heavy, you can improve drainage by adding sand or gravel to the bottom of the planting hole. It is also advisable to add mature compost to enrich the soil with nutrients, even if you favour a natural gardening approach without chemical fertilisers.

Once planted, water feijoa regularly, especially during dry spells. Avoid excess water to prevent root rot. To encourage fruiting, you can also mulch the base of the plant with dead leaves or straw. With a little care and attention, you'll soon be able to enjoy the delicious fruit of the feijoa in your garden.
