How do I plant lychees?
To plant lychees in the ground, it is important to choose a sunny spot sheltered from strong winds. Planting is best done in spring, so that the young plants can root well before the onset of winter. The soil should be well-drained, rich in organic matter and slightly acid.
Create a hole twice as wide as the root ball of the plant and incorporate well-rotted compost into the bottom of the hole. Place the plant in the hole, fill in with a mixture of soil and compost, and tamp lightly. Water copiously after planting and take care to keep the soil cool, but not soggy.
If temperatures fall below 0°C in winter, it is advisable to protect the young plants with a winter sheet. In summer, be sure to water regularly and mulch the base of the plant to keep the soil moist.
