Miscanthus
When should miscanthus be planted?
Miscanthus is an easy plant to grow in a natural garden. To plant it in the ground, choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Avoid soil that is too wet or too dry. Work the soil deeply before planting to encourage root development.
You can plant miscanthus in spring or autumn. Dig a hole twice as wide as the plant's root ball and place it at the same depth as in its original container. Pack the soil lightly around the plant without compacting it too much.
If you prefer to transplant miscanthus rhizomes, do so in spring. Bury the rhizomes a few centimetres deep in loose, moist soil. Space them about 50 cm apart to allow the plant to develop properly.
Once planted, water regularly for the first year to help the plant establish itself. Miscanthus can do without fertiliser if the soil is of good quality. In winter, cut back the dry stems to ground level to encourage regrowth in spring.
