Potato RatteHow do you sprout Ratte seed potatoes?
To successfully sprout Ratte potatoes, it's important to start by choosing good quality tubers. Make sure they are firm, unsprouted and mould-free. Next, prepare loose, well-drained soil, preferably in full sun.
Before planting the potatoes, you can leave them to soak in water for a few hours to encourage sprouting. Then cut the tubers into equal-sized pieces with at least one sprouting eye on each. Leave them to dry for a few days before planting to avoid rotting.
Create furrows about 10 cm deep and space the potato pieces about 30 cm apart. Cover them with soil and water regularly to keep the soil moist but not soggy. Avoid adding fertiliser, as potatoes generally make do with the natural compost in the soil.
As the plants grow, ridge them regularly to encourage tuber formation. Ratte potatoes are generally harvested when the leaves start to yellow and wilt. All that's left to do is enjoy them in salads or pan-fried - they're a real treat!
