How do I sow rutabagas outdoors?

To sow rutabagas outdoors, it's best to wait until spring, when the risk of frost has passed. Choose a sunny, airy spot with well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Before sowing, spade the soil deeply and incorporate compost to improve its structure.

Sow the rutabaga seeds about 1 to 2 centimetres deep, spacing them about 30 centimetres apart. Be sure to cover them with fine soil and tamp lightly to ensure good contact with the soil.

Water regularly but sparingly, taking care not to let the soil dry out between waterings. Avoid the use of chemical fertilisers, favour natural methods to feed your plants.

Maintain a healthy soil.

Watch out for pests such as flea beetles and slugs, and act quickly to keep them away from your rutabaga plants. Harvest the roots when they have reached the desired size, usually after about 3 months of growth.
