How to sow marigolds successfully outdoors?

To sow marigolds (calendula) outdoors, we recommend doing so in spring, once all risk of frost has passed. Prepare the soil by weeding and loosening with a spading fork. Choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil.

Scatter the marigold seeds over the prepared soil, spacing them about 20 centimetres apart. Then cover them with a thin layer of fine soil and tamp lightly. Water gently to keep the soil moist but not soggy. The first shoots should appear after one to two weeks.

Be careful not to overwater to prevent rotting of the young seedlings. Once the plants are well established, you won't need to water frequently, as marigolds are fairly drought-resistant. You can enjoy their beautiful flowers all summer long, and even let them reseed for even more abundant flowering the following year.
