How to sow tobacco successfully under cover?

To sow tobacco successfully under cover, it is best to start in March. Use cups or trays filled with light, well-drained potting soil. Place the tobacco seeds on the surface of the mould and cover very lightly with potting soil. Water gently to keep the substrate moist, but take care not to soak it.

Then place the pots or trays in a bright, warm place, ideally between 20 and 25°C. Be sure to maintain good humidity by covering with perforated plastic film, for example. Tobacco seeds will germinate in about 1 to 2 weeks.

After germination, remember to aerate the plants regularly to avoid any risk of rotting. Once the young tobacco plants have a few leaves, you can transplant them into well-amended, sunny soil. Remember to space them about 50 cm apart to encourage optimum development.
