Split tomatoes: why do they crack and how to avoid it?

It sometimes happens that, during the fruiting of tomatoes, we observe the bursting of certain fruits. We can then see splits or cracks on the surface of the tomato when it becomes ripe. Fortunately, there are several methods to protect yourself from this inconvenience.

What are the causes of bursting on tomatoes?

The bursting phenomenon that can be observed on tomatoes is mainly due to excessive water supply. No parasites or any does not in fact play a role in the occurrence of this problem. Therefore, during the first weeks following installation in the garden, watering must be abundant without being too close together. As a result, the roots of the plant will tend to sink into the ground to find the water it needs. Another system is also possible, namely drip irrigation. In this way, the plant will always benefit from the necessary quantity of water.

On the other hand, there is another factor over which we have no control if the tomato plant is grown in the vegetable garden. It's about the rain. However, it is possible to prevent the tomatoes from being watered by the latter by installing a shelter above them, so that they are not exposed to it. Furthermore, providing mulch around the tomato plant is also an interesting solution. In fact, it is similar to a drip device, which will ensure good drainage of the water. Likewise, the ground will retain its freshness and remain soft. Cracks on tomatoes should always be taken seriously, as they are likely to lead to mold growth. This can therefore be detrimental to a good harvest.
