How to sow butternut squash successfully under cover?

To sow butternut squash successfully under cover, it is advisable to do so at the end of April. Choose a bright, warm spot to set up your shelter, away from draughts. Use peat pots or terracotta pots filled with potting soil rich in organic matter.

Place a butternut squash seed in each pot, buried about 2 cm deep. Water gently so as not to dig up the seed. Keep the soil moist but not soggy while you wait for germination, which should take one to two weeks.

Once the plants have reached a height of around ten centimetres, you can transplant them into the ground, taking care to space them well apart. Mulch the soil to conserve moisture and limit the growth of weeds.

Take care not to over-water your plants to avoid the development of diseases such as mildew. Favour watering at the foot, preferably in the morning. By following these simple tips, you should harvest beautiful, healthy and tasty butternut squash.
