Mesclun
How to sow mesclun successfully outdoors?
To successfully sow mesclun outdoors, choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Prepare the soil by carefully weeding it and breaking it up with a hoe. No need to add fertiliser, mesclun is content with little.
The best time to sow mesclun is in spring, when temperatures start to warm up, or in autumn for a late harvest. Scatter the seeds over the surface of the soil, spacing them about 1 to 2 centimetres apart. Then cover them with a thin layer of soil and tamp lightly.
Keep the soil moist but not soggy by watering regularly. In hot weather, don't hesitate to mulch to conserve moisture. The first shoots should appear in a few days to a week.
Beware of slugs and snails, which can damage your mesclun plants. You can keep them away by scattering crushed eggshells around your seedlings.
