How do I plant a peach tree?

To grow peach trees in the ground, we recommend planting them in autumn or spring, when the soil is neither too dry nor too wet. Choose a sunny spot sheltered from cold winds. The soil should be well-drained, light and fertile.

Create a hole twice as wide and deep as the root ball of the plant. Add mature compost and potting soil to improve soil structure and encourage growth. Place the root ball in the hole, making sure that the collar is level with the ground. Fill in with a mixture of soil and compost, packing lightly.

Water abundantly after planting, then regularly for the first few weeks. Peach trees do not need chemical fertilisers, but an organic mulch at the foot of the plant will provide them with the necessary nutrients. Remember to prune dead or diseased branches every year to encourage fruit production and prevent disease.

How do you prune your peach trees?

To prune a peach tree properly, it's essential to distinguish between the different types of pruning: training, maintenance and fruiting. Training pruning is done as soon as the tree is planted to give it structure and encourage its harmonious development. Maintenance pruning involves removing dead, diseased or overgrown wood every year after harvesting. Finally, fruiting pruning aims to encourage fruit production by removing non-fruiting branches and opening up the canopy to let in light.

It's important to know that peach trees produce fruit on the previous year's wood. So, for good fruit production, we recommend not pruning too severely and encouraging the growth of the branches that will bear fruit. Ideally, fruiting pruning should be carried out in winter, when the tree is at rest. Be sure to disinfect your pruning tools to prevent the spread of disease. By following these tips, you'll be able to enjoy a fine harvest of delicious peaches in your garden.

How to optimise your peach harvest?

Peaches are generally harvested in midsummer, when the fruit is fully ripe. To tell if a peach is ready to pick, simply lift it gently: if it detaches easily from the tree, it's the right time. It is advisable to pick them gently to avoid damaging them.

Freshly picked peaches will keep at room temperature for a few days, but it's best to eat them quickly to enjoy all their aroma and flavour. If you have a large quantity of peaches, you can freeze them to keep them for longer.

In natural gardening, it's important not to use chemical fertilisers to ensure healthy, natural fruit. Make sure you water your peach trees regularly and protect them from disease by keeping a close eye on them. With a little patience and care, you can enjoy delicious peaches from your own garden.
