How do I sow Egyptian black beet outdoors successfully?
Egyptian black beetroot is an easy plant to grow outdoors without the need for fertiliser. To sow outdoors, it's best to wait until the soil has warmed up, usually in spring. Choose a sunny, well-drained spot to plant your seeds.
Before sowing, weed the soil well and work it deeply by hoeing. You can add compost to improve soil fertility, but it's not compulsory. Sow your Egyptian black beetroot seeds about 10 cm apart, covering them lightly with soil.
Make sure the soil stays moist but not soggy. Water regularly but don't drown the seeds. Once the plants have reached a few centimetres in height, thin them out by spacing them about 20 cm apart to encourage their growth.
Beware of slugs and snails, which can damage young plants. You can keep them away by placing crushed eggshells around your crops. By following these simple tips, you should get some beautiful black Egyptian beetroot in your garden.
