How do you grow perpetual leeks?

To grow the perpetual leek, it is best to plant it in the ground in a sunny to semi-shady spot. It is recommended to plant it in spring or autumn. Make sure you choose a spot with well-drained soil, rich in organic matter and slightly acid.

It is advisable to divide the clumps every 3 to 4 years to encourage leek growth. To do this, simply dig up the clumps, divide them into several parts and replant the pieces in the soil.

Perpetual leeks are hardy and low-maintenance plants. Just make sure you water regularly, especially during dry spells, and mulch the soil to retain moisture.

Avoid using chemical fertilisers so as not to disrupt its natural development. Favour natural gardening methods such as mulching or composting to nourish the soil and encourage leek growth.

How do I harvest perpetual leeks?

Perpetual leek is a plant that can be harvested all year round. To harvest it, simply cut off the leaves at the base, taking care to leave about 5 cm of stem. Be careful not to remove the plant completely to allow for future regrowth. The most tender leaves are generally found in the centre of the plant.

The perpetual leek crop keeps well in the fridge in a perforated plastic bag for about a week. For longer storage, you can also freeze the leek by cutting it into slices and placing them in a plastic bag in the freezer. Perpetual leeks are a very practical vegetable to grow, as they require no fertiliser to develop. By always having leeks available in your garden, you can enjoy them regularly to enhance your dishes throughout the year.
