How do I sow Guernsey parsnips outdoors?
To sow Guernsey parsnips outdoors, it is best to do so in spring, as soon as the soil can be worked. Choose a sunny spot with loose, well-drained soil. Before sowing, weed the area thoroughly and loosen the soil by spading to a depth of around 20 centimetres.
Sow the parsnip seeds 1 to 2 centimetres deep, spacing them about 10 centimetres apart. Afterwards, you'll need to thin out the plants so that they're around 20 to 25 centimetres apart. Be sure to keep the soil moist but not soggy, watering regularly.
Parsnips are easy vegetables to grow, but it's important to keep an eye out for pests such as slugs and carrots, as well as fungal diseases. To limit these problems, you can mulch the soil and practise crop rotation. Harvest parsnips when the roots have reached a satisfactory size, preferably after the first frosts for optimum flavour.
