How do I sow carrots outdoors?

To sow carrots outdoors, we recommend doing so in spring, when the soil is sufficiently warm. Before sowing, it is important to prepare the soil by carefully weeding and decompacting it with a spading fork to allow the carrots to develop properly.

It's best to sow the carrot seeds about 1 to 2 centimetres deep, spacing them about 3 to 5 centimetres apart. Be sure to pack the soil well after sowing to ensure good contact between the seeds and the soil.

It's important to monitor soil moisture during germination, making sure it always remains slightly damp. Once the plants have reached a few centimetres in height, it is advisable to thin them out, keeping the most vigorous plants and spacing them about 10 to 15 centimetres apart. It is also important to protect young plants from pests, such as slugs and rabbits, using natural means of control.

When should carrots be harvested?

Carrots can be harvested from late summer to early winter. It is advisable to harvest them when the leaves begin to wilt and the roots have reached a satisfactory size. To harvest them, simply pull gently on the top part of the carrot, holding the stem firmly to avoid damaging it. It's best not to pull them out of the ground to avoid breaking them.

After harvesting, fresh carrots can be stored in a cool, dark place, such as a cellar. It is important to store them in an airy place to prevent them from rotting. Carrots can be kept for up to several months in good conditions.
