Cherry tree

In the Rosaceae family, the cherry tree is a fruit tree that offers many advantages in the orchard. Rustic and easy to maintain, it offers a magnificent bloom in spring and delicious fruits. Generally used for jams or pastries, cherries also find their place in savory recipes thanks to the many varieties and flavors more or less sweet. Among the most popular, the Morello cherry varieties are more acidic. There are also Bigarreau cherries, such as Burlat or Napoleon, which are yellow-orange in color. Or the guigne variety, of which the Belle de mai, particularly sweet, is a part.

A cherry tree is most often planted in the ground, ideally between October and April. This will require digging a hole about 50 to 60 cm deep, making sure to distance it at least ten meters from other trees or a house. For a balcony or a small garden, some varieties can be grown in pots. In any case, this fruit tree likes a sunny exposure sheltered from the wind, but does not appreciate soils that are too humid.

One year after planting, in autumn, it is recommended to make a first training pruning to balance the tree during its growth. Then each year, remove a third of the carpenters to encourage branching. However, cherry trees do not tolerate being pruned too often.
Depending on the variety, the cherry tree produces its first fruits 2 or 3 years after planting and the harvest takes place between May and July.
