Fennel is a vegetable much appreciated in pan-fried, braised or to flavour a soup. It belongs to the Apiaceae family. There are many varieties of fennel, "Orion" which is a very early species,"Romanesco" which is rather late,"Rondo","Solaris" and "Victorio". Sowing fennel is simple.

If sowing is easy, it should be done under protection, either in a tunnel or in a greenhouse in the coldest regions. Indeed, the plant fears frosts, so it is important to protect it. On your calendar, you can start sowing from April to June. If you prefer to sow in the ground, you should wait until May or June. Fennel prefers a sunny spot in the garden. During its culture, the ground must remain fresh. It must be light and rich and you can enrich it with manure. Stony soils should be avoided.

As your plants grow, you will have to regularly butter your young shoots until they reach 15 cms. You will have to be vigilant to the invasion of aphids. If you are invaded, a spray based on black soap will do the trick. The harvest will be done from July to December, that is to say between 3 and 4 months after the sowing.
