How do I sow lentils outdoors?

To sow lentils outdoors, it's best to wait until after the spring frosts. Prepare the soil by carefully weeding it and working it deeply so that it is well aerated. Lentils grow in light, organic-rich, well-drained soil.

Create shallow furrows about 3 cm deep and space the lentil seeds about 5 cm apart. Cover the seeds with fine soil and pack lightly. Water regularly, but sparingly to prevent the seeds rotting.

Make sure the lentil plants get enough sun and protect them from strong winds. Lentils need little maintenance, just weed regularly and water in the event of prolonged drought. Harvest the lentils once they are dry on the plant, then leave them to dry out further before harvesting and storing them in a dry place.

How to harvest lentils efficiently?

Lentils can be harvested from September until October. It is important to wait until the lentil pods turn brown and dry on the plant before harvesting. To do this, simply cut the plants off at the base and hang them upside down in a dry, airy place. Once the pods are completely dry, simply open them to retrieve the lentils.

Lenses can be stored in a dry place away from light for about a year. It is best to store them in tightly sealed glass jars to avoid any risk of moisture. Lentils are an excellent source of vegetable protein, fibre and minerals, so it's worth growing them for a healthy, balanced diet.
