Romaine lettuce, also known as cos lettuce, is a plant prized for its many health benefits. Rich in fibre, minerals and vitamins, it is ideal for aiding digestion and boosting the immune system. What's more, its delicate, crunchy flavour makes it an essential ingredient in many recipes. It can be enjoyed as a salad, but it can also be sautéed, grilled or braised for variety.To grow romaine lettuce in the vegetable garden, we recommend sowing it directly in the ground from March onwards. It is advisable to choose a sunny spot, but sheltered from the wind. The seeds should be covered with a thin layer of fine, well-packed soil to ensure good germination.
