How to sow peas successfully under cover?
To grow peas under cover, we recommend sowing the seeds in containers such as cups or pots in February or March. Fill the containers with good quality potting soil and place one or two seeds per container, spacing them about 5 cm apart. Then cover the seeds with about 2 cm of potting soil and pack lightly.
Be sure to maintain constant but not excessive humidity, watering regularly. Once the plants are about 10 cm tall, they can be transplanted into the ground, spacing the plants about 5 cm apart. Peas prefer soil rich in organic matter, so don't hesitate to add compost around the plants.
Beware of slugs and birds, which can attack young plants. For slugs, you can place natural barriers such as crushed eggshells around the plants. For birds, you can use protective netting.
By following these simple tips, you'll be able to harvest delicious peas in just a few months, to the delight of your taste buds!
How to sow peas successfully outdoors?
To grow peas outdoors, plan to sow in spring, usually in March-April. Choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Before sowing, spade the soil, possibly adding well-decomposed compost. To sow, dig furrows about 3-4 cm deep and space the pea seeds about 5-8 cm apart. Cover the seeds with soil and press lightly. Water regularly but sparingly to keep the soil cool but not soggy.
Be sure to protect your seedlings from predators, especially birds, by covering the seedling with a screen or netting. When the plants start to grow, you can stake them to support them. Harvest peas when the pods are full, picking them regularly to encourage production. By following these simple tips, you'll be able to enjoy delicious, fresh peas from your garden.
How do I plant peas?
To plant peas in the ground, choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Work the soil deeply by spading and adding a little compost if necessary. Peas are generally planted in spring, when the soil has reached a temperature of around 10°C.
Create furrows about 5 cm deep and space the pea seeds 5 to 10 cm apart. Then cover them with fine soil and pack lightly. Water regularly but lightly to keep the soil moist, but avoid excess water which could cause the pea roots to rot.
If you sowed indoors in pots, wait until the plants are at least 10 cm tall before transplanting them into the ground. Be sure to space them about 5 to 10 cm apart in rows 40 cm apart. Protect young plants from predators with insect netting if necessary.
How to harvest peas
Peas can be harvested in late spring and early summer, when the pods are full but still tender. To harvest them, simply pick by hand, pulling gently on the stalk to avoid damaging the plant. It is important to harvest regularly to encourage new pods to form. Once harvested, peas can be kept in the fridge for 3 to 5 days. For longer storage, they can be frozen after blanching for a few minutes in boiling water and cooling immediately in iced water. They can also be preserved in jars with a little salt and water, so that they can be enjoyed all year round. Finally, we recommend leaving a few pods on the plants to harvest the seeds and sow them the following year.
