Red kuri squash

The Red kuri squash, a squash and fruit-vegetable, is delicious in a soup, puree, gratin, dessert or simply baked. The Red kuri is a squash of the cucurbit family, the most famous varieties being the "Red Kuri", the "Golden Delicious" or the "Chestnut Bush". The Red kuri squash is relatively easy to grow.

The seeds are sown under cover or in the ground, but it is possible to plant the plants directly in the garden. The pumpkin fears the cold. We wait to sow until the soil is warm enough. You can sow in May in the garden or in a warm bucket as early as April for transplanting in the garden from mid-May. The Red kuri squash needs a maximum of sun and prefers to be sheltered from the wind. This vegetable fruit is greedy; it needs a rich, deep, cool and not too humid soil.

Watch out for slugs that like young plants! Keep the soil cool by mulching and/or watering without wetting the leaves and without excess humidity. To limit crowding, prune the main stem when it has five leaves above the second leaf. If rains are frequent, shelter the Red kuri squash under a board or tile. Harvest in September, October, when the foliage dries out, about three to four months after sowing.
