Rhubarb
What a pleasure it is to enjoy rhubarb pie, jam or compote! Rhubarb is a perennial plant in the Polygonaceae family that can grow up to one meter in height.This perennial plant is an easy to grow stem vegetable that requires little care.
Rhubarb can be purchased in pots and planted directly in the ground or propagated by seed.There are about 50 species of rhubarb, but the most common are garden rhubarb (Rheum Rhabarbarum) and Rheum rhaponticum. Nepal rhubarb (Rheum Emodi) and Rheum Paltanum atrosanguineum are more appreciated for ornamental purposes. Sowing is done between August and September or in April - May while division is recommended in March or September - October.The first harvest can be done the year after planting.
As for exposure, rhubarb is not difficult: sun or half-shade are very suitable. It appreciates cool, deep and very loose soil. Do not hesitate to add humus regularly because it is very fond of it. A good fertilization every two years is enough to keep the plant for ten years. The flower stems must be removed as soon as they appear.This garden plant is not afraid of anything except slugs and snails. To protect the young plants, maintain a bed of ashes.
