How to sow sage successfully under cover?

To sow sage under cover, it's best to do so in spring. Choose a well-drained container and fill it with good quality potting soil, without adding chemical fertilisers. Sow the sage seeds on the surface of the compost and cover lightly with soil. Water sparingly to keep the substrate slightly moist, without soaking it.

Place the container of sage in a bright place, but without direct sunlight. Maintain a constant temperature of between 18°C and 22°C to encourage germination. Be sure to aerate regularly to prevent fungal diseases.

Once the sage plants have developed a few leaves, you can transplant them into individual pots or in the ground, taking care to maintain a spacing of around 30 cm between each plant. Sage likes well-drained, fairly dry soil, so avoid excess water.

How do I sow sage outdoors?

Sage is an aromatic plant prized for its fragrance and medicinal properties. To sow it outdoors, we recommend doing so in spring, when the risk of frost has passed. Prepare the soil by weeding and working it thoroughly. Choose a sunny, well-drained spot.

Sage seeds should be sown about 30 cm apart. It is important not to bury them too deeply, a depth of 1 to 2 cm is sufficient. Tamp the soil lightly after sowing and water gently so as not to displace the seeds.

Keep the soil moist but not soggy until the seeds emerge, which can take a few weeks. Once the plants are well developed, you can transplant them, spacing them about 60 cm apart.

Be careful not to over-water sage plants, as they do not appreciate excessive moisture. By following these tips, you should see your sage plants develop healthily and provide you with beautiful aromatic leaves to garnish your dishes.

When should sage be harvested?

Sage is an aromatic plant that is easy to grow and harvest. The best time to harvest sage is in early summer, just before it flowers. All you need to do is cut the stems at leaf level with sharp scissors. This is best done on a sunny day, after the morning dew but before the heat becomes too intense.

Once harvested, sage can be used fresh or dried. To preserve it, we recommend hanging the stems upside down in a dry, airy place away from light. Once dry, the leaves can be stored in hermetically sealed glass jars. Dried sage can be kept in this way for several months.
