How do I plant shallots?

To grow shallots, we recommend planting them in the ground in autumn or spring. Choose a sunny, well-drained spot to avoid water accumulation. The soil should be light and rich in organic matter.

Before planting shallots, divide the bulbs into individual pods. Push the pods into the soil to a depth of about 5 cm, spacing them about 10 cm apart.

Be sure to water the shallots regularly, especially during dry spells. It's important to keep the soil cool but not soggy. Avoid using chemical fertilisers, favour natural gardening methods such as mulching with compost or straw.

Shallots can be harvested after about 6 to 8 months of growth. Once the leaves start to yellow and wilt, pull the bulbs out of the ground and leave to air dry before storing in a cool, dry place.

To harvest shallots, simply pull the stalks gently out of the ground. It is advisable to leave them to dry in the shade for a few days to preserve them longer.

Shallots should be stored in a cool, dry place away from light. It is best to store them in a paper bag or in baskets with holes to allow air to circulate. Shallots can keep for several months if stored correctly.
