Tetragone
Tetragon, also known as New Zealand spinach, is an easy-to-grow plant that offers many health benefits. This plant is rich in vitamins C, A and K, as well as minerals such as calcium and iron. It is also an excellent source of fiber, making it an ideal addition to any balanced diet. In terms of cooking, tetragon leaves are often used as a substitute for spinach. They can be eaten raw in salads, steamed, stir-fried, or added to soups and stews to give them a slightly tangy flavor.
To grow the tetragon in your vegetable garden, it is recommended to sow the seeds in spring, once the night frosts have stopped. For good results, seeds should be soaked in water for 24 hours before sowing. It is best to sow them at a depth of about one centimeter in well-prepared soil. The tetragon grows best in soil rich in organic matter and well drained. It is important to give plants space so that they can develop properly; a spacing of approximately 30 centimeters between each plant is recommended.
Regarding exposure, the tetragone likes the sun but can also tolerate light shade. It requires at least six hours of direct sunlight per day to grow optimally. Once the plants have grown, it is important to provide regular watering, taking care to keep the soil moist but not soggy. It is also recommended to apply mulch around plants to help maintain soil moisture and reduce weed growth.
The tetragon is a relatively easy plant to care for. It is fast growing and requires little maintenance once established. However, it is important to monitor for insect pests such as aphids and flea beetles, which can damage leaves. In such cases, it is recommended to use biological control methods, such as the use of insecticidal soap or pyrethrum-based spray.
Harvesting the tetragon can begin approximately 8 to 10 weeks after sowing. Leaves can be picked as they mature, starting with the largest leaves at the base of the plant. It is important not to harvest more than a third of the leaves at a time, to allow the plant to continue to grow. Tetragon can be harvested throughout the summer season until early fall, as long as temperatures remain mild.
