Thyme
How to sow thyme outdoors?
Thyme is an aromatic plant that is easy to grow outdoors. To sow thyme outdoors, choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil. It is best to sow in spring, after the last frosts.
Before sowing, loosen the soil by working it with a grelinette or spade to remove weeds and stones. Then sow the thyme seeds about 0.5 cm deep in furrows spaced about 20 cm apart.
Keep the soil moist until the seeds germinate, then reduce watering once the seedlings appear. Once the thyme plants have reached a sufficient size, you can thin them out, leaving just one plant every 20 cm.
Be careful not to overwater thyme as it prefers dry soil. Also avoid excess moisture, which could encourage the development of disease. By following these simple tips, you'll be able to enjoy your own fresh thyme to flavour your dishes!
How to harvest thyme
Thyme is an aromatic plant that is easy to grow and harvest. To obtain an abundant harvest, it is important to plant thyme in a sunny, well-drained spot. There is no need to use fertiliser, as thyme grows well in poor soil.
The best time to harvest thyme is in early summer, just before flowering. To harvest, simply cut the stems with scissors or secateurs, taking care to leave at least a third of the plant intact to encourage regrowth.
Thyme keeps well once harvested. You can dry it by hanging it upside down in a dry, airy place, or by placing it on a rack in the shade. Once dried, store thyme in an airtight container away from light to preserve all its aroma.
