Tomato Marmande

The Marmande tomato is a very popular variety of tomato, known for its sweet taste and juicy texture. It is rich in antioxidants, vitamin C and potassium, making it a very healthy food for the body. It can be eaten raw, in salads, or cooked, in sauces, soups or stews. Its delicate flavour goes perfectly with other vegetables, aromatic herbs and cheese.

To grow Marmande tomatoes in the vegetable garden, it is best to sow them indoors, from March onwards, in pots filled with potting soil. It is important to maintain a constant temperature of around 20°C to encourage the seeds to germinate. After the last frost, around mid-May, the plants can be transplanted into the ground in a sunny spot sheltered from the wind. It is advisable to space them about 60 cm apart to allow them to develop properly.

To care for Marmande tomatoes, it is essential to prune them regularly to encourage fruit growth and limit the spread of disease. It is also important to water the plants well, taking care not to wet the leaves to avoid mildew. You can use a fertiliser rich in potassium to encourage fruit formation and install stakes to support the branches loaded with tomatoes.

The Marmande tomato harvest period runs from July to September, depending on the weather conditions. The fruits are ready to be picked when they are fully ripe, i.e. when they are a deep red colour and snap lightly when pressed with the fingers. It is advisable to pick them regularly to stimulate the production of new fruit and enjoy their delicious flavour throughout the summer.
