How to plant turmeric
Turmeric is a tropical plant that requires rich, well-drained soil to develop properly. To plant it in the ground, it is best to wait until spring, when there is no risk of frost. Dig a hole about 15 cm deep and mix the soil with compost to enrich the soil. Place the turmeric rhizome 5-10 cm deep and cover with soil. Be sure to space each rhizome about 20 cm apart to allow for good growth.
If you live in a region with a cooler climate, you can also grow turmeric in a pot to make it easier to move indoors in winter. Use a deep pot and provide good drainage to prevent water stagnation. Place the rhizome at the same depth as for planting in the ground.
Water your turmeric regularly, but take care not to over-wet it to avoid root rot. During the growing period, you can fertilise with homemade compost to nourish the plant naturally. With plenty of sunshine, your turmeric should thrive and provide you with beautiful roots to harvest in autumn.
When should turmeric be harvested?
Turmeric can be harvested in late summer or early autumn, when the leaves begin to yellow and dry out. To harvest turmeric, simply dig up the rhizomes carefully, taking care not to damage them. Once harvested, the rhizomes can be stored for several weeks if kept in a cool, dry place. To preserve turmeric for longer, it can be frozen after peeling and cutting into pieces. Turmeric can also be dried by leaving it in the open air for a few days, then ground into a powder for later use.
