How to sow turnips successfully outdoors?
To sow turnips outdoors, it is best to do so in early spring or late summer to avoid the extreme heat. Before sowing, it is important to prepare the soil by lightly spading and weeding. Turnips prefer loose, well-drained soil.
For sowing, we recommend sowing the seeds about 2 cm deep and spacing them about 10 cm apart. Be sure to water them regularly to keep the soil moist, but avoid excess water which could cause the seeds to rot.
Also be sure to protect young plants from predators such as slugs by setting up physical barriers or using natural control methods.
By following these simple tips, you should have beautiful turnips ready to harvest in just a few weeks. Happy gardening!
How to harvest turnips
Turnips are root vegetables that are easy to grow in the garden. For the best harvest, sow turnip seeds in spring or summer, spacing them about 10 cm apart in rows 30 cm apart. Be sure to water regularly, especially in dry spells, but avoid excess water, which could cause the roots to rot.
Turnips are harvested around two months after sowing, when the roots are of a suitable size. To check whether the turnips are ready to harvest, simply pull gently on the leaves: if they come off easily, it's time to harvest. Use a spading fork to gently dig up the roots without damaging them.
Turnips keep well in a cool, dark place, such as a cellar, for several weeks. They should be eaten quickly to enjoy their flavour and nutritional benefits. Happy harvesting!
