White onionThe white onion, like the yellow and red onions, is a hardy bulbous plant that is used extensively in cooking. It is eaten fresh because it does not keep well. It belongs to the Aliaceae family. The best-known varieties for sowing in September are the Very Early Queen and the Extra Early Barletta. For sowing in February, there is the Hâtif de Vaugirard or the Hâtif de Paris.
In the vegetable garden as in the garden, the white onion is easy to grow. The white onion calendar is not strict! It can be sown or planted directly in the ground. It can be sown in March-April or in August-September. To plant in the ground, choose the months of February/March or September/October. Choose a sunny location and avoid humidity. The white onion likes light, old smoked soil. Avoid clay soils and any addition of manure.
White onions are easy to grow and require little watering. The soil should not be wet to prevent the onions from rotting. Harvesting is done when the leaves start to dry. It takes about six months after sowing in late winter. Sown in late summer, they are harvested as needed.
