Tomato
Crimean Black TomatoThe Crimean black tomato is a very popular variety of tomato, known for its sweet flavour and distinctive dark purple skin. This tomato is rich in antioxidants, vitamins A and C, and minerals such as potassium and magnesium. It's ideal for adding colour and flavour to your salads, sauces and dishes. You can also enjoy it raw as an appetiser, or use it to make jams or chutneys.
To grow the black Crimean tomato, we recommend sowing it indoors from March and planting it in the ground from May. It is important to choose a sunny, sheltered spot with rich, well-drained soil. Plants should be spaced about 50 cm apart and staked for support.
To care for the Crimean black tomato, it is essential to water it regularly, without wetting the leaves, and to apply organic fertiliser once a month. It is also advisable to pinch off the gourmands (the lateral shoots) to encourage fruit production and remove the lower leaves to limit the risk of disease.
The Crimean black tomato is generally harvested from July to September. It is important to pick the tomatoes when they are fully ripe, picking them carefully so as not to damage them. You can keep them for a few days at room temperature, or cook them immediately to take full advantage of their unique flavour.
