Leeks
Summer leekThe summer leek is often appreciated in soup, to decorate broths or in salads. It belongs to the Liliaceae family like onions, garlic or asparagus. The best known varieties are the "Jaune Gros du Poitou", the "Géant précoce race Major", the "Albos" or the "Electra". It is easy to grow.
The cultivation period of the summer leek is in January and February. You can proceed to sowing on a warm bed. Then, they will be transplanted into the ground when they have reached a size of about twenty centimeters, that is to say around May. It prefers sunny exposures. The ground must always be wet during the period of growth. It likes rich, aerated and loose soil. Do not hesitate to add compost in autumn to ensure good growth.
After planting and until harvest, you will have to hoe and weed to remove all the weeds that could invite themselves in your vegetable garden. You will also have to be careful with leek blight: the leaves will dry out and wilt. The soil should be kept moist but not soaked, as it would become a vector of disease. You can start harvesting summer leeks in May. It is at this date that you can start to sow the winter leek varieties to have some throughout the cold season.
